IEFSA Fantasy League 2016/17 Draft Recap

Recently the draft for the IEFSA Fantasy League for the upcoming season was held on Fantrax. I was determined to assemble a better squad than the one I saddled myself with at the start of last season. Even though I claimed a respectable midtable position, I was constantly battling with injuries, out of form players, players not making it into their teams starting elevens, and of course, fixture bias against my team.

Things get a little more complicated with this year’s draft though, as there are more teams involved, and some players can be held over from last year’s game. For my part I held on to Marko Arnautovic for his salary of $1. The Stoke City top scorer was one of my best performers last season and I hope he can keep up that form into 2017. Let me explain the make up for the rest of my squad after the draft was completed.

In goals I went with Tom Heaton of Burnley. I got burned badly last year after spending $31 to get the Chelsea goalkeepers and didn`t feel like over spending in this area again. Burnley did not have a bad defensive record in the Championship and I’m hoping Heaton can emulate someone like Gomes, who gained lots of points for Watford in their first season back in the top division. With all the fantasy teams taking a team each, if things go wrong then he will be very hard to trade away. I could very well be stuck with him.

I`ve coupled Heaton up with his teammate Michael Keane in defence. Keane is a regular at the back and could perhaps be fancied to get three or four goals this year. I only spent $3 and won`t be too hurt if I have to jettison him later in the season. I put most of my money into two other players to make up my defence. Arsenal`s Bellerin cost $25 and is one of the highest scorers in the game, while Leighton Baines cost $19 and is looking to bounce back this year after an injury hit 2015/16. Everton should improve at the back under new man Ronald Koeman, plus I’m hoping Baines' frequent attacks forward can bring some joy too.

Last year my marquee signing was Memphis Depay…….. This year I spent even more money on another Manchester United player. I ended up in a bit of a bidding war for the services of Mkhitaryan and when the dust had settled he was in my squad for $71, which is way more than I had planned to pay. But I felt I had to secure a signing after seeing a number of other big names slip away. I will need the Armenian to play every game and to continue the form that saw him score nearly once every three games in the Bundesliga last season.

If he's half the player Tom Cleverley was then my money was well spent.

To compliment him in midfield I picked up two (currently injured) Arsenal players, Wilshire and Cazorla. I`m banking on them breaking into the Arsenal team sooner rather than later, and they are definitely an upgrade on the two Arsenal players I had last year in Welbeck and Coquelin. To round out the midfield I brought in Kevin Mirallas for $12, again this is a player I expect to be rejuvenated with the arrival of Koeman at Goodison Park. The last midfielder I took a punt on was Joe Allen. If he had stayed at Liverpool I would have never touched him, but at Stoke he will surely be given more game time. He likes to keep possession and I hope he will be able to set up a good few chances for my other Stoke player, Arnautovic.

All that`s left is to look at are the players who will supply the goals in my squad, the forwards. Arnautovic has already been mentioned. The two other Forwards did not have great seasons last year in the Premier League, but under the guidance of new managers maybe it will be their time to shine. Pedro was signed for $9 and as he is not a guaranteed starter at Chelsea, he will probably occupy a bench spot on my team. The main Forward I have will be Fabio Borini.

No, hear me out! Borini got five goals last year in a largely hopeless Sunderland side. This year they should be a bit tighter and more organized under David Moyes. If Moyes can get goals out of Jelavic and Anichebe, he can surely get goals out of Borini.

Borini is due a goal, and I'm due a huge slice of luck!

I still have some money to dabble in the free agent market if there are any transfers to the Premier League before the end of the month. I will probably look for a defender to rotate into my side, or perhaps a more consistent midfielder if my Arsenal players end up spending most of their time on the treatment table.

The opening matchup is fast approaching. Look out for a preview before the weekend. And to keep up with all the goings on in the league, follow @THE_IEFSA on Twitter.

Why This Won't Be Your Year: Premier League 2016/17 Preview, Part 1

Hull City Tigers

That`s what your cookie cutter official website calls you, so suck it up Hull fans. The website is also holding a riveting poll on which shirt you would buy, home, or away? Why would you choose the away kit, unless you secretly wanted to hide your allegiances behind a strip so plain and white you could pass for a county cricketer. The Hull City Official Supports club website runs a far more interesting poll about when was your favourite Hull game at Wembley. Though I’m a bit suspect of this site, as no one comments on anything, and they seem to be excited by the new shirt sponsor. Three years with a Kenyan betting site across my chest wouldn`t exactly get my pulse racing.

Why This Won’t Be Your Year

When your own manager wants nothing to do with you after promotion, you know you’re in trouble. When some of your best players are more than willing to drop back down a division rather than tog out in the top tier, you should probably think twice before forking out for that season ticket too. With the opening day looming it seems you will be reduced to picking eight fit players, a cream telephone box in midfield, with two airfix planes up front, to make up the starting eleven. That opening day fixture is none other than Premier League Champions Leicester City, who will be more than happy to come and win one nil, leaving you with that faint hope that maybe you can compete this season.

Of course lots of people blame the owners, the Allam family, for this state of affairs. But what did you expect a billionaire to do with an exotic wild animal, only to shoot it dead, skin it into a nice rug, all before giving it a cute nickname? The club is currently up for sale (kind of), but not before the owners get that sweet, sweet TV money, sucker some fans into season tickets, and perhaps some of that parachute payment cash after inevitable relegation. Buying Blackpool probably looks like a safer investment at the moment, plus you`d at least get a successful ladies team with them.

The team captain is sidelined for three months with injury. The caretaker manager has never managed an actual game from the dugout as a manager before. All your best players played in the Premier League two years ago and they were crap then, so why would this season be any better?? Oh those heady days of Phil Brown. In fact they should build a statue of Phil Brown serenading Giovanni and Bernard Mendy outside the KCOM stadium to remind fans of the good old days, Hull City Council should get on this right away.

You Couldn`t Write The Script

If they can keep all the other more ambitious teams from buying all their half talented players then perhaps they have a chance of staying up. You don`t get out of the Championship without a somewhat decent first eleven. Another bright spot has been the preseason form of Adama Diomande. The Norwegian was one of the top scorers in the Tippeligaen not so long ago and could transfer that to the Premier League, where you don`t have to play as many games in the Arctic Circle.

Burnley

Face it Burnley fans, this is just a year of travelling to strange places to watch football games before the serious business of gaining promotion from the Championship in 2017/18 begins next August. You know this, I know this, the manager knows this, and the owners definitely know this. So let`s be realistic here before any talk of `doing a Leicester` enters our heads.

What was it like to be on the conveyor belt of great Liverpool defenders Jon?

Why This Won’t Be Your Year

You might come from a small town, but you’re not even interesting enough to have the smallest stadium. Your captain is from Chester, which is bloody miles away, and your top scorer comes from the far flung lands of Wolverhampton, so stop pretending like you’re the guardians of English football parochialness. Your manager is from Kettering; it’s easier to get to Paris from Kettering than to travel up to Burnley. So stop pretending you`re a small club. Ramsbottom United are a small club. You are not a small club.

Speaking of your manager, I guess the best thing that can be said about him is that after Burnley sold all their `stars` when they dropped out of the Premier League two seasons back, they all turned out to be a bit crap without him. Oh how Kieran Trippier would love to be supplying long balls to a grateful Danny Ings right about now. He was also linked with the English manager’s job during the summer. It seems the FA decided to go with the one manager who probably plays more long balls than Sean Dyche. England play once a month, and most of those shouldn`t even be classed as a competitive international. Dyche could have managed the two jobs easy. What did the FA think he was going to do? Call up Dean Marney??

Also, what’s up with your club crest? It looks like something drawn on the ZX Spectrum. A colour bleed of garish purple and yellow. The club should go back to the crest they had which featured two lions and a bee, and didn’t have a stork at the top. But I guess it’s not as boring as the West Ham crest.

You Couldn`t Write The Script

This side is surely better than the team that couldn’t get a win in the Premier League until November in 2014. Plus Andre Gray is definitely better than Danny Ings and should help them get more goals than the pathetic effort of 28 goals in 14/15.

They’ve also dodged a bullet when Joey Barton decided to retire to write a few chapters of his autobiography up in Scotland, as he hasn’t been good in the Premier League since about 2010. He surely would have seen red under the bright lights of Match of the Day, before getting into an altercation with one of Turf Moor’s racist bottle throwing fans on the way to his early bath.

Another positive is that majority of the league is composed of teams barely better than most of the sides in the Championship, and if they can make themselves hard to beat they can reach the promised land of finishing ahead of Sunderland or someone…

Middlesbrough

Seemingly by default Middlesbrough are everyone’s favourite team in the north east. Or at the very least, in their top three or four. The `Boro have been knocking on the door of promotion for so many seasons now everyone was just waiting for them to just give up and accept a life of Championship obscurity, a la Ipswich Town. But no, they seem determined to eke out a season in the top tier before doing that, probably after Steve Gibson has gone through everyone on his LinkedIn account in January, all their players leave after getting a taste of Premier League action and think they are bigger than the club, topped off with a Lee Cattermole goal at the Riverside in March rooting them to the bottom of the table right before Aitor Karanka`s heart explodes, leaving the dream team of Gareth Southgate and Gordan Strachan to be drafted in to sort things out. Enjoy it `boro fans.

Maybe he thought there was no relegation like in the MLS?

Why This Won’t Be Your Year

And what`s going on with signing all these players in pre-season? How many new faces do you need? You know what clubs signed a stupid amount of players last year? Yep, Aston Villa and Newcastle, and it worked out great. You even went and signed Villa`s goalkeeper. The team that conceded the most goals in the league, you went out and signed their goalkeeper. I never understand why you would let your squad be infested by players who only a few months previous were strolling around as their team was getting embarrassed. Yeah, that’s the kinda spirit we need. Middlesbrough even played Villa in a friendly recently, and beat them (thank god). Luckily your manager seemed to take positives from it, saying the game was good for everyone. Oh great, a run out against Villa will prepare you for the exertions of the Premier League. It`s like pushing over a bunch of toddlers in preparation for a fight in the UFC. And once again, Brad Guzan, jeez, you might as well have loaned Bruno Zuculini again to see if he was any good in goals.

Of course everyone is getting excited about Alvaro Negredo. A player so good he couldn`t get a game at Madrid. A player so good Valencia let him go on loan despite only having one senior striker in their squad. A player so good Spain didn’t bother bringing him to EURO 2016 even though they were crying out for a goalscorer. But what about all those goals at Man City you ask? Well, he only scored nine league goals in his one season there. The same amount as Danny Welbeck that year. But if you need someone to score a hat trick in the league cup, Negredo`s your man. So when Middlesbrough draw Gillingham in the EFL cup, high tail it down to the bookies and lump on boro fans, you`ll be swanning around the banks of the River Tees like Alfie Common the next day.

You Couldn`t Write The Script

Hey, but you never know. Perhaps this is the season that Stewart Downing finally delivers on that promise he`s been bottling up for the last 15 years. Remember that time he was your top scorer? The same year that saw Middlesbrough beat Man City 8-1! How long will it take the team to reach eight goals this year? I`m guessing halfway through October.

Even if things fail to click up front early on, at least things will be safe at the back. Victor Valdes has won more honours in his career than Brad Guzan has clean sheets in the Premier League (I did not make this stat up). Valdes went on a short holiday to Belgium a few months back, and he still somehow managed to win the Belgian Cup.

Sunderland

Do you know that if you go to every other Premier League club`s Wikipedia page it will say that `Team X plays in the Premier League`. Not Sunderland though, their page adds the beautiful caveat of `currently plays in the Premier League`. Even random compilers of arbitrary information realize this team is on a stay of execution, and soon it will descend towards the light of the Championship.

The only reason to go to the stadium is to take in the `Officer and a Gentleman` ladies nights, unless you find some perverse pleasure in seeing Man Utd and Spurs rejects try to do an impression of a back four. I believe the two corners of the main stand have a shrine to a golden boot and a pair of hooped earrings in honour of the only two people to bring joy to the ground in living memory, Kevin Philips and Beyonce. It`s going to be a another long season Sunderland fans, and a long way from the clubs heyday of the 90s (that`s the 1890s).

David Moyes slowly morphing into Roy Hodgson here.

Why This Won’t Be Your Year

So your manager left to pick an England squad every few weeks. This is perhaps good news for Jermain Defoe, who surely should have been rewarded for coming out of retirement in the MLS to rescue the Black Cats from relegation with a call up to EURO 2016. Though it`s probably for the best in the long term, as he would have only come back with his soul crushed like all the other England players.

And who`s the new manager? ……………. drum roll please …………… David Moyes! I bet that sets the pulse racing doesn`t it. He followed a tough act at Man Utd and made them worse. He then went to Sociedad and somehow made them worse too. The pinnacle of his career has been taking Preston out of the fourth division. You can point to his 11 years at Everton, but he just made them a sterile club that was happy to finish around sixth every year. He`ll be the manager everyone forgets managed their club, even Everton supporters. The managerial equivalent of a blind spot, that tricky table quiz answer you won’t be able to answer as you down your fifth pint of Double Maxim.

Before a ball is kicked Moyes is already rabbiting on about his win percentage. You are solely employed to win football matches, that`s all you have to do. You could watch animal porn on a projector and loud speakers in the club museum, but if you win football games no one will give a crap. Unless your win percentage is hovering around 90%, don`t talk about your win percentage. I can just see Sunderland winning on the last day of the season and reaching 40 points to stay up. Only for Moyes to be sacked because he drew the 37 other league games, leaving him with a shocking 2.6% win percentage.

You Couldn`t Write The Script

Well, the club isn`t harbouring a pedophile anymore, so that`s always a plus.

This could be the year Fabio Borini catches fire and loses the use of his baby finger after celebrating one too many goals. It could also be the year Defoe swaps his Spurs pillow cases for ones featuring Samson the Black Cat, and he decides to score goals before Sunderland are six points from safety sometime in March.

Also, what have you done with Wes Brown? Is he not a player there? When did he stop being a registered player? I`m half expecting a Panorama special entitled `The Disappearance of Wes Brown`. Where they show grainy footage of a figure going up for a corner, only for the away team to break down field and score. As the camera pans back we can only make out a cloud of smoke and perhaps the flag of a long extinct fifth or sixth official.

Bournemouth

Or AFC Bournemouth as they insist on being called. Is all this just a ploy to be top of the league on opening day? And what`s with the A anyway? Athletic. Are you sending guys to the Olympics now? Perhaps Tyrone Mings was bought because of his proficiency in the pole vault. Maybe I should head to the official club website to find out. Oh dear, oh no, my eyes! The site is all written in red and white on a black background, I know that`s the colour of your kit, but why do you assault me like this. A.C. Milan have the same colour jerseys and their website is far more readable, and that’s in Italian. Possibly taking more cues from the Italian giants, AFC could stand for `Associazione Faceto Calcio` but I guess we`ll never know.

Hmmmm should've gone for the England job...

Why This Won’t Be Your Year

Dean Court is getting a second season of top tier football. This would have been unthinkable back in the days of Harry Redknapp and Tony Pulis. Thankfully you`ve got a hot young manager who likes to spend money like a born again Brendan Rodgers, in the effort to keep the Cherries in the top flight. He also looks like the newborn baby of a tryst between Dan Dare and an Easter Island head. I`m sure that’s why all these fringe Premier League and middling Championship players flock to the south west to be with him.

The season couldn`t start out much tougher for Bournemouth, as they host Man Utd. If you thought Leeds supporters rioting through the town in 1990 was bad, wait until Zlatan is finished with you. Artur Boruc won`t be able to sleep for a month. Josh King will forget where the goalposts are after seeing his incredible haul of six goals in one season get obliterated in one afternoon. The team won`t be able to lift themselves off the bottom of the table for two months. The only highlights in that time will be some of your new signings snapping their cruciate ligaments after tumbling down some steps in the Ted Mcdoughall Stand in an ill-advised photo-op.

The Cherries got nine points off the trio of teams that got relegated last year, that won’t be happening again. They had the worst defence of all the teams that stayed up last year, so what have they done to remedy this? They`ve loaned one defender who really wants to be a midfielder, while paying six million (Yes, 6,000,000) for another player who has more studs on his boots than first team appearances, and also, doesn`t really want to be a defender.

You Couldn`t Write The Script

You know, that Jordan Ibe can be quite handy. He can play on either wing. He has an eye for the odd goal or assist. If he helps them stay up his fee will seem like a bargain, plus they can sell him on to Chelsea at three times the price at the end of the season.

Bournemouth overall are a very young squad. A few good results and they could be this year’s surprise team. A poor man`s Spurs if you will. Except lacking the flair, and the nagging self-doubt.

IEFSA Fantasy League Week 27 Preview

It’s a proper IEFSA Fantasy League week of fixtures this week. Last week I managed to gain a cheeky win thanks to an Arnautovic goal despite having only four players playing! This leaves me on thirteen wins and thirteen losses, a model of middle of the road consistency.

This week I will face @DanRiccio590, who himself sits comfortably in midtable, just one place and three points above me. So this really is a massive game for my squad. Win and things start to look up. Lose, and there are three or four teams waiting behind me for any kind of stumble. Last weekend’s FA Cup affected fixtures left @DanRiccio590 nursing a loss. But if our two sides met then, Dan would have been celebrating a victory.

@DanRiccio590’s Team

Dan has a quality squad that has been unlucky with injuries and inconsistencies of form. Eden Hazard has struggled to find the form that saw him be crowned last season’s player of the year. He is injured for this weekend’s fixture though as Chelsea host West Ham. He does have a fit and inform Hammer though in Dimitri Payet. It looks like he will only have Payet, Antonio (both West Ham) and Imbula (Stoke City) to fill his three midfield positions this weekend, as Shaqiri is due to miss another game for the Potters with injury.

Up front he will be hoping that Graziano Pelle’s recent glut of goals was not a once off, because his other forward options are the injured Connor Wickham, and the out of favour Wilfried Bony. Remember him! He probably wouldn’t want Bony to play anyway as he has a Man United duo in Smalling and De Gea aiming for some clean sheet points when the Red Devils head to battle local rivals Man City.

What I Need To Happen

As I have Courtois in goals, I will need West Ham to be kept quiet at Stamford Bridge. If two of his players are shut out, it will go a long way to me getting the three points. Clean sheets could be crucial this week. Unfortunately most of my defenders will be playing at different times this weekend and this mean a lot of scrutiny of lineups come three o’clock on Saturday. Three defenders play at home in games that are surely ripe for clean sheets. Olsson of West Brom will host Norwich. Nyom of Watford will entertain Stoke. While Angel Rangel of Swansea will welcome Aston Villa to Wales in the Saturday evening kickoff. Swansea will not have a better opportunity to keep a clean sheet for the rest of the season.
Still unbeaten in league, but what have they to play for now??

If I’m looking for goalscorers, my best bet is probably in Georginio Wijnaldum when Newcastle play Sunderland in the early Sunday game. Wijnaldum saves his goals for home games and he has been saving up a lot lately, so surely a goal or two are due. Normally I would also look to Andre Ayew to bag a goal. Especially since the Swans are hosting a hapless Villa side this week. Unfortunately Ayew has an ankle injury and will miss the game.

Predictions

There was no post last week because most of the sides were missing players. To make up for that, here is an in-depth look at each of the fixtures in the IEFSA this week. Don’t forget to follow @THE_IEFSA on Twitter to see how each team is doing. And to also follow me, @GarryIrwin, to find out what, specifically, my team isn’t doing!

@FuzzyWarbles will be looking to bounce back from last week’s defeat when he faces bottom of the table @DFS_hambazaza. He will be sweating over the fitness of Nicolas Otamendi as Man City host an often goalshy Man Utd. But will probably look further up the pitch in that game for points as he has Silva and Mata in that game. @DFS_hambazaza is pretty much reliant on a bumper game from Sergio Aguero again, but I can’t see him getting too many against Man U when LVG parks the Fellaini bus at the Eithad.

Baba Rahman, Benteke, Remy, Walcott, Pedro, Navas. This sounds like a list of players you would rarely put in your fantasy team until they actually did something consistent on the pitch. Unfortunately for Andrew, these players make up the bulk of his squad. @nikarg can keep pace with the leaders here thanks to players like Rondon and Eriksen.

Six wins on the trot has seen @RotoZroik move up to second in the table.  A number of his players have red flags next to their names and are doubts for the weekend. This could see him shuffle his pack and introduce some players from the bench. Tom’s side on the other hand is relatively injury free. He doesn’t have many superstar performers though (Kante, Drinkwater and Schlupp for Leicester are playing well, but not huge point getters) so perhaps wont have enough to upset the inform side this week.

The fixture computer shows it’s continuing bias against @GarryIrwin by making him face a team which contains two of the most inform players in the league at the moment; Payet of West Ham and Pelle of Southampton. Garry will have to play this fixture without one of his top scorers in Andre Ayew too. This all points to @DanRiccio590 picking up the win.

This is the matchup of the weekend as leader @wrigavin face off against third place @Smokey_Loogy. Both sides got back to winning ways last week, but who will pick up the crucial three points this week? Looking at the two squads and the fixtures of each player, my opinion would probably fall on the side of Harry Kane, @wrigavin, over deeney and Ighalo of @Smokey_Loogy.

Now that Arsenal’s season is virtually over, it’s probably around the time that Olivier Giroud starts scoring goals again. He loves midtable teams and dead rubber games, and Arsenal versus Everton ticks both those boxes. Of course if he does @nealjthurman will be very happy. @BenDinnery on the other hand will be without Diego Costa due to suspension and will be reliant on Patrick Bamford to get the points. Norwich strikers seem to have some sort of hoodoo over them and I can’t see him getting off the mark away to West Brom.

Last week’s loss has dropped YIRMA back to sixth. In a desperate effort to get back into title contention he looks like he will deploy Divock Origi upfront when Liverpool head to Southampton.  Origi has two goals this season, but that’s twice as many goals as his other forward Emmanuel Adebayor. With all these crucial stats in mind, it will more than likely be his midfield of Alli, Toure and Ozil will get him over the line this week. @GalinDragiev could cause an upset if Raheem Sterling or Adam Lallana start justifying their high transfer fees. But between you and me, they won’t start doing that this week.

@cjradune is the other team still in the title race. He has been having a Vardy party for most of the season, though the party has been dying down somewhat of late. There should still be enough partytime left to overcome @SportsByGotti. @SportsByGotti’s team has suffered a weird affliction where if his top scorer got to five goals they would go down with a crippling injury (De Bruyne, Wilson, Redmond). His current top scorer has four, Diafra Sakho, will probably not want to score this week. Plus, Sakho-Party, doesn’t quite have the same ring to it.

IEFSA Fantasy League Week 25 Preview

Another really tight affair last week saw me squeak a win by only 0.7 points over @nealjthurman. The win was pretty much singlehandedly earned by two goal Marko Arnautovic. That result leaves my still in ninth, with 12 wins and 12 losses. My team gets a chance to perhaps move up a place this week if they can overcome @BenDinnery. Ben’s team might sit four places below me in the league, but he has won his last two games and has actually outscored my side over the course of the season so far.

This weekend will see most of the Premier League teams play their third game in seven or eight days. These leads a lot of managers to rotate members of their squads, as well as the increased likelihood of some players picking up knocks that may keep them out of the starting eleven. My side has been fortunate in not picking up any new injuries, but @BenDinnery doesn’t have any new red flags to worry about either.

@BenDinnery’s Team

The weak link in his team has probably been his goalkeeper. Newcastle seem to pack it in after they concede their first goal and this has effected the points Rob Elliot has been able to gain. The Toon do host Bournemouth this Saturday though and it will be a game that Steve McClaren will be determined to win. At the back he has three defenders who like to get in among the goals. Ivanovic, van Dijk and Kolorov have all scored twice this season, with Ivanovic and Kolorov even providing a couple of assists each. With those two players having a couple of winnable home games this weekend, it could be a very profitable Saturday indeed.

His midfield has been quiet of late, with Mark Noble’s goal against Norwich three games ago being the only bright spot. It’s up front where @BenDinnery’s team has been helping him gain victories of late. Diego Costa has put his early season funk behind him and has scored eight goals in his last ten games. He also has Saido Berahino in the OF position, and with Tony Pulis seemingly abandoning his defence first approach recently (the Baggies last two games have involved 9 goals!). Berahino has played the full ninety minutes in those two games, while also contributing a goal in a win over Crystal Palace.

What I Need To Happen

I was lucky to get the win last time out, especially since I didn’t have a full roster of players playing. Nyom of Watford found himself on the bench again, in what I hope is just a rotation issue. But I will have to keep an eye on the lineups for the Saturday evening kick-off, where Watford entertain table toppers Leicester. My only defender with a favourable fixture is probably Angel Rangel of Swansea, as they host Norwich. The Canaries don’t travel very well, so a trip to Wales could see them camp inside their own box for ninety minutes!
Chelsea (along with 12 other teams) are eyeing a European place again

Further up the pitch things have been looking a lot brighter of late. Memphis Depay has been getting more game time, while not exactly pulling in more points it has to be said. Arnautovic has rediscovered his scoring boots, but will face a Chelsea side who have yet to lose under Guus Hiddink in the league this season. My main goal threat will have to come from Andre Ayew and Georginio Wijnaldum again. Ayew as I’ve mentioned will be facing a timid Norwich side. And Wijnaldum saves all his goals for Newcastle’s home games, so will be expected to get back on the scoresheet this weekend against the Cherries.

Predictions

Ouch! Only two correct predictions from seven last week, as everything became a bit unpredictable thanks to a lot of squads missing players because of the league cup final. @wrigavin picked up another win though to move six points clear at the top of the table. Remember, as always, you can follow @THE_IEFSA on Twitter for the latest action, and you can also follow me, @GarryIrwin for all the latest overreaction!

IEFSA Fantasy League Week 24 Preview

I’m still amazed that I pulled off the victory over @SportsByGotti in the last gameweek. A really tight matchup saw me get the victory by a paltry 0.4 points. It was pretty much a race to the bottom though as both teams posted barely over 30 points. My star man was Moreno as Liverpool went and embarrassed Aston Villa six nil. What angers me though is that I left a lot of points sitting on the bench. This week though, most team’s benches will be filled with players who won’t have a fixture to play. The League Cup final between Man City and Liverpool has taken those two team’s players out of contention this week, as well as Everton and Newcastle United’s squads.

My squad will be missing three players as I prepare to face @nealjthurman this week. @nealjthurman is only three points and one place below me in tenth. His side won last time out thanks to a Matt Ritchie goal and  a couplke of Giroud and Fabregas assists. Ben Foster also kept a rather surprising clean sheet away to Everton. All this helped him to 48.9 points. This week will see him missing two players, so let’s have a look at his squad.

@nealjthurman’s Team

His two missing players have been solid performers for him this season. Ayoze Perez of Newcastle has five goals, while Gerard Deulofeu of Everton is his top assisting player with eight. This leaves him with only one Forward option in Olivier Giroud, while his OF options leave him looking at either Chris Brunt of West Brom or Ben Watson of Watford. Both those players are starters for their respective clubs, although Brunt has been playing more as a left back of late, limiting his usually productive attacking play.

Elsewhere in midfield he has been waiting for Leroy Fer to come to life in a Swansea jersey, but perhaps a trip to Tottenham is not the time to be looking for that to happen. At the back he has three defenders who all will be expecting to keep their opposition scoreless. Bellerin, Fuchs and Rose will surely not give up too many goals collectively this weekend, which will mean I will need my backline to match them cleansheet for cleansheet.

What I Need To Happen

Two of my three defenders play at home against sides not known for scoring too many goals away from home. Nyom of Watford will host Bournemouth, and Jonas Olsson, who picked up an assist last time out, will play against a recently goalshy Crystal Palace. My remaining defender is Angel Rangel, but as I’ve already mentioned, a trip to White Hart Lane is not to place to go if you are looking for points. Which means I don’t hold out much hope for my midfielder Andre Ayew to score a goal. But I may need him to score, because I’ll be missing my top scorer in Newcastle’s Georginio Wijnaldum this week.
Messi scored twice against Arsenal midweek, so Memphis should score......
But maybe, just maybe, I have an ace up my sleeve! Wayne Rooney has picked up an injury and will be missing for the next couple of weeks. Martial also went off injured in the Europa League on Thursday night for Manchester United. All this means that Memphis Depay has been getting substantial game time. Plus he seems to have been making the most of the opportunity. Admittingly the last two positive performances out of the Dutchman have come in games against Shrewsbury and FC Midtjylland. That and United will be playing Arsenal this Sunday, never the easiest of fixtures. If Memphis turns out to be more of a joker than an ace, then perhaps I can rely on Marko Arnautovic to score some goals when Stoke welcome a woeful Villa side to the Britannia at three o’clock on Saturday.

Predictions

Of the seven predictions in Gameweek 23, I managed to correctly predict a respectable five. This will will be extra difficult to predict because so many squads will be without key players. This won’t stop me from picking a winner in each matchup. IEFSA Fantasy League Week 23 Preview

Last weekend my side was unable to topple @wrigavin from the summit of the IEFSA Fantasy League, and he remains three points clear of his nearest rival coming into Gameweek 23. My team struggled to an almighty 36.3 points as a goal and assist for @wrigavin’s RobertoFirmino put the gloss on an easy victory. An immediate reaction will be required from my players this week as they face a @SportsByGotti side which sits six points and only three places below them.

A number of his most dependable starters are red flagged to be missing this week, most notably Kevin De Bruyne, but he still has some more than capable reserves in which to call upon. My reserves on the other hand have usually been hugely disappointing when they have had to be thrown into the deep end of competitive Premier League action. None more so than Memphis Depay, who has developed some sort of bizarre footballing version of a reverse Midas touch. If he hadn’t been signed for so much money, he surely would have been loaded out to Preston North End or somewhere by now!

@SportsByGotti’s Team

Mike’s team could almost boast a whole starting eight of players who have gained over 100 points for the season. My side on the other hand would have to make do with only four such players. Recently he has been picking up more defensive points through the efforts of his goalkeeper, Swansea’s Fabianski, and his Southampton defender Cedric Soares. Arsenal’s Laurent Koscielny has been his star at the back though, with three goals and nine clean sheets. In a normal season you would expect the Gunners to shutout the Foxes this Sunday lunchtime, but this has been anything but a normal season.

At the other end of the pitch, @SportsByGotti has mainly been relying on De Bruyne to get the goals (yet he still only has five). If we look around the fixtures this weekend in search of where the goals should come from, you would perhaps pick out Oscar at home as Chelsea host Newcastle, or if Nathan Redmond can find his way back into the Norwich starting 11, (and if you can’t get into the current Canaries side you should really be taking a look at your career!) perhaps their home game with West Ham will supply some goals.
Redmond & Gueye met on the pitch last weekend, but will battle on Fantasy turf this gameweek.

What I Need To Happen

If Newcastle can keep Chelsea quiet at Stamford Bridge it would be a bonus, as @SportsByGotti will have both Oscar and Willian looking to get on the scoresheet. But I wouldn’t want the Magpies getting too cocky, as I have Courtois in between the sticks and he’s due a much needed clean sheet. Only Courtois and Rangel will be playing at home this week for my defence, therefore clean sheet points will perhaps be thin on the ground.

As the old mantra goes, ‘Goals win games’. Now, I’ll be honest, I can’t even remember the last time one of my players found the old onion bag. In Wijnaldum, Arnautovic and Ayew, I had three players who were finding the net regularly up until the New Year. They each face tricky defences this weekend, so perhaps my best hope is that Idrissa Gueye scores his first goal of the season against Liverpool on Sunday. Although three shots on goal in 22 games means I won’t be rushing down to the bookies to put the house on it.

Predictions

Five from seven last time, out as both @TomSunderland_ and @DFS_hambazaza enjoyed highscoring weekends to gain victories against opponents far above them in the table. IEFSA Fantasy League Week 22 Preview

The last time I played @wrigavin, he beat me handily. In fact, if I had faced @wrigavin every week this season, of the 21 weeks so far I would have a total of three victories. So to say that this weekend’s matchup is an uphill task really is a bit of an understatement. He has six players into triple figures for the season (Harry Kane alone has 270 pts) whereas my side has only three. His team has scored a total of 41 goals so far, to my sides lowly 32. And as I’ve often repeated in these previews in the past, ‘Goals win games’.

That’s not to say I won’t have no chance this weekend. I will more than likely have more players in my squad playing at home which is always a bonus. My top three goalscorers are all playing at home and they do most of their goal getting in front of their home fans (75%). His goalkeeper has also struggled for form recently because of Crystal Palace’s run of five straight defeats and shipping of 13 goals. So perhaps all is not lost!

@wrigavin’s Team

It’s tough to look at this side and not be envious of the forward pairing of Kane and Firmino. 20 goals, five assists and over 400 points between them, all makes for intimidating reading. And when you consider I paid 10m more than Firmino and the exact same price for Kane when I purchased Memphis Depay (2G,0A, 82pts) at the start of the season, well, you could understand if I skipped out on watching the Premier League action this weekend and just went drinking instead.

Not only do his strikers put the fear of god in most teams, but his midfield is not too shabby either. Of the five players he can choose from, all are goal threats and have a combined 15 goals this season. I expect him to go with Tadic, Brady and Cabaye this weekend. They pull in over 19 points on average; or he could throw in Heung-Min Son if he starts against Watford

What I Need To Happen

A good start for my side would be if Andre Ayew was to get on the score sheet against Crystal Palace. This would prevent @wrigavin from picking up a clean sheet with his goalkeeper. Similarly, if Wijnaldum and Arnautovic were to score, this would stop two of his defenders from getting a clean sheet bonus. In short, I need goals. Hopefully the goals I get will do enough damage to negate any of the points that Firmino and Kane will pick up when they face Sunderland and Watford respectively.
Steve McClaren will hope Wijnaldum enjoys the comforts of home this week
It would also be good if all of my players actually started for their clubs. I’ve long given up on Memphis being put on the teamsheet for Manchester United, with this weekend’s Chelsea clash being no different. In defence I’ve had to draft in West Brom’s Jonas Olsson. With Johnny Evans out injured, Olsson has been playing regularly. Which is more than I can say for two of my other defenders; Jenkinson (injured), Nyom (lost his place to Paredes). My back three will consist of Olsson, Rangel and Moreno. I expect them all to play, but don’t necessarily expect them to outshine their three or four points per game average.

Predictions

Gameweek 21 saw only four correct predictions, as a lot of tight matchups helped to condense the top half of the league. The top eight could all stake a claim to winning the league, so let’s see how they will do this weekend.
