Fantasy Golf: Waste Management Phoenix Open

The less said about last weeks tournament the better I feel! A fall to the 52nd percentile in Yahoo Fantasy Golf and not even scraping three figures in the Official PGA Fantasy Golf game. As I thought, it was the crucial Group A picks that cost me. Bill Haas won the tournament and pulled in 68pts for a lot of people, if you didn't have him (and I didn't!) you were in trouble. This week again sees Group A with only a small number of golfers to choose from. Only seven from that group scored last week, hopefully this week will see more than that number.

Arizona is the place to be this week at TPC Scottsdale for the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Bill Haas is proving to be a popular pick again, while Matt Kuchar and Patrick Reed have made it into over half the fantasy teams. I haven't selected any of those three for my team though as I attempt to pull in the points with a few outsiders.

Here are the listings for this week. They are broken up into their respective groups from Yahoo Fantasy Golf, but as always if playing PGA Fantasy you can select any four golfers.

Group A
Bubba Watson
Harris English
Seung-Yul Noh

Phil Mickelson
Hunter Mahan
Graham DeLaet
Robert Streb

Fantasy Golf: Humana Challenge

The PGA Tour heads to California this week for the Humana Challenge. What's unique about this event is that it is played over three courses. Every golfer will get a round on each course over the first three days before the 54-hole cut is made. From a Fantasy perspective, especially in Yahoo, it would appear to favour rotating your players depending on which course they have to tackle that day. Of the three courses, Palmer, Nicklaus and La Quinta, Nicklaus yields the lowest scores with La Quinta the highest. The final round will be played on the Palmer course, so it could pay to have players who have shot lowest on this in one of the earlier rounds, tee up for your team on the final day.

You know the drill with the picks at this stage. A bigger list than the last two weeks, as with the way the tournament is set up, you should have a wide open field (maybe!). The A Group in Yahoo only has seven golfers to choose from though, which makes those two selections a bit tricky. It's something that could make or break your week.

Group A
Matt Jones
Luke Donald
Ryan Palmer

Group B
Kevin Streelman
Andres Gonzales
Phil Mickelson
Cameron Tringale
Matt Kuchar

Group C
Brendon Todd
Tony Finau
Justin Thomas
Stuart Appleby
Russell Knox
Bryce Molder
Pat Perez
Patrick Reed
Scott Stallings
James Hahn
Daniel Summerhays
Jonas Blixt
Derek Fathauer

Fantasy NFL: Season Recap

This season I played only three Fantasy NFL games; Yahoo, ESPN and Official NFL. I dropped the Fox Sports game this year, as it was just a very annoying game to play. I had two teams in each game. Some did good, some did bad, some did okay. Let's have a look at how things went.

Yahoo

My first team, Famagusta Punterama, finished with a 9-5 record and in fourth position. I was seeded second going into the playoffs, but lost the semi final and third place game in embarrassing fashion. In the semi-final my team missed their projected points total by nearly 40 points, while in the last game I left 47 points sitting on the bench.

A reminder that Luck is sometimes against you!
My second team, the imaginatively titled 'garry's Team', also finished 9-5. They just came up short in the championship game, losing by 10.76 pts. It was a loss of my own making as I played Matt Ryan (17.58) at QB and left Russell Wilson (36.36) twiddling his thumbs. I also left another 20 points on the bench but that's another story!

NFL Fantasy

A record of 10-4 for my first team was not enough to see them have a solid playoff spell. Losing the semi-final before losing the third place game by a heart-breaking 0.42 points. My opponent made up the difference on the Monday night game too which was hard to watch! I had to settle for fourth place in the end.

My second team in the Official NFL Fantasy Football game finished with a 7-7 record and had to make do with a fifth place finish. That my team would have beaten all four top seeds in week 15 was a little hard to swallow too. Winning the 'Most Satisfying Player' trophy that week with Odell Beckham was not much consolation either! But there is always next year.

ESPN

Okay, let's get this out of the way. Of the 10 teams in this league I finished tenth. A 4-9 record for the season is not anything to write home about. I wish I could say I was given a really tough schedule, but my team had the lowest 'points for' of all the teams, and the third lowest 'points against'. I had a Quarterback rotation of Brees, Flacco and Dalton. So that didn't go too well......

Let's end on a high note. My final team, Shanghai Horses (not sure where I got that name from!), rode a 4 game winning streak to finish 8-5 and then smash the second seed 251-171 in the semi-final before upsetting the 12-1 number one seed in the final by 219-198. I was 10pts behind going into week 17, but thanks to Beckham, Bryant and Romo, my team turned it around for the win.

It's not how you start, its how you finish

A pretty solid season all around. I was probably a little too reliant on the Bengals Defence and Dalton at the start of the season. A situation that inevitably leads you to looking at the waiver wire from then on. These Fantasy games are solid. Similar in ways, but just different enough. Maybe I will add another Fantasy NFL game next season. Any recommendations? We will just have to wait and see. Also, since my beloved Bengals limped out at the wildcard stage again, I have no interest in who wins the Super Bowl this year!!

Fantasy Golf: Sony Open in Hawaii

Last week saw us have the top three players in Yahoo Fantasy Golf, so not a bad start to the season. Although a lot of players had them to be honest, in what was a small field. This week sees a bigger selection of golfers to choose from and gaining points is going to be that much tougher.

The PGA Tour remains in Hawaii this week for the Sony Open. Defending champion Jimmy Walker tees up, but as you shall see, we eschew him in favour of some other names.

As always, picks are divided up into three groups as per Yahoo Fantasy. While PGA Fantasy Golf lets you select ant four players.. Here are this weeks picks...

Group A
Luke Donald
Harris English
Matt Every

Group B
Matt Kuchar
Billy Hurley III
Chris Kirk
Zach Johnson
Jason Day
Daniel Berger

Group C
Brendon Todd
Russell Henley
Boo Weekly
Tim Clark
Rory Sabbatini
Justin Thomas
Mark Wilson
Jerry Kelly

Fantasy Golf: Hyundai Tournament of Champions

The PGA Tour returns this week with a weekend in Hawaii for all of the 2014 tournament winners (well, those who show up!). It's a pretty small field of 34 competitors and there will be no cut to worry about either. So it should be a little easier from a fantasy perspective, yes?

Well we'll see about that come Monday! Yahoo Fantasy Golf returns this week for its twelve week winter swing. PGA Fantasy is into it's seventh week. It started its fantasy season last October at the Frys.com Open. Sang-Moon Bae won that tournament to earn his right to tee up at Kapalua here in the new year.

Not many picks this week as a result, but as always the list will be divided up into A, B & C groups according to their placing in the Yahoo Fantasy Golf game. Underlined players are in my team, strongest picks on top. The PGA Fantasy game let's you pick any four players for your team and you score points on their final placing. In Yahoo you score points for the lowest card of the day, with bonus points for a top 3 finish at the end. You pick 8 players, but only score points each day for 4 of them, but can rotate in any of your other 4 reserve players each day.

Without further explanation, here are the picks for this weekend.

Group A
Bubba Watson
Matt Jones

Group B
Matt Kuchar
Chris Kirk
Jason Day
Jimmy Walker

Group C
Patrick Reed
Tim Clark
Geoff Ogilvy
Scott Stallings

Good Luck Everyone
